Wortley Top Forge
Wortley Top Forge is the oldest surviving heavy iron forge in the world, with a history that dates back to at least 1640. This Scheduled Ancient Monument celebrates the iron industry's heritage in South Yorkshire and serves as an industrial museum featuring many working exhibits.
The forge operated until around 1910 and is notable for its impressive water-powered machinery, including a large breastshot water wheel that once forged wrought iron railway axles during Victorian times. Visitors can explore its diverse buildings and natural environment, which include workshops, cottages, and picnic areas. Generated from the website
