The town has the reputedly best example of an 11th century main street dominated by the preserved Norman Castle and surrounded by 13th century churches. The Royal Oak is the best location for exploring surrounding areas, as a one-night stop while completing one of the many well-known walks, or as a break on your journey from South to Scotland or vice versa. ​ ​
