Many people have asked why we named the Bar ‘Sherlock's Bar’. The reason is that perhaps Portsmouth’s most famous literary connection, Arthur Conan Doyle, was the creator and writer of the Sherlock Holmes books. In 1882, Arthur Conan Doyle set up a Medical Practice in Southsea, which allowed him time to begin to write the Sherlock Holmes books.
