The original Warrington JD Wetherspoon, The Friar Penketh stands on the site of a 13th Century Augustinian Friary and opened in 2001. The Augustinian Hermit Friars were an order 'devoted to teaching, the cure of souls and missions'. One of their number, a scholar called Friar Penketh, is mentioned in Shakespeare's King Richard III.
