A hostelry by the name of 'The George', has stood on this site for over 5 centuries. The present building was erected in 1620 during the reign of King James 1. Before this the 'George Ale House', stood here and had done so since 1462. The George has interesting past connections with smuggling. The Doctor Syn stories were written locally by Russell Thorndyke. So if you want to leave behind the hustle and bustle of city life come and stay at The George. There is plenty to do on Romney Marsh, or The Fifth Quarter, as it is sometimes known. Just up the road is Dungeness, an area which has inspired writers, artists and film makers for many years. On a good day you can see France. Other places to visit are the RSPC bird reserve, The RHDR - Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, The Sound Mirrors or listening ears as they are known locally [open a limited number of times a year] You could visit the old lighthouse at Dungeness to get a good view of the Romney marsh. Due to the flatness, the area is popular with walkers and cyclists. Whether you want to relax with a drink, enjoy some food or listen to live music you will be made very welcome. Why not come and stay so you can explore this beautiful and unique area at your leisure?
