The Lions is a small boutique bed and breakfast located at 55, London Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1RZ, that offers comfort and a place to relax that is truly a home from home. It is a beautiful, Grade II listed, detached town house that is one of the finest in Newark. It is run by Pablo Petit- Breuilh and John Taylor and draws upon Pablo’s experience of international travel and tourism and John’s experience of growing up locally; both Pablo and John will work tirelessly to ensure your stay is an excellent one. Newark is a beautiful market town, sitting on the banks of the river Trent in the East Midlands, it is steeped in history, being a Royalist stronghold and besieged in the English Civil War. Now in more peaceful times Newark is famed for its antique shops and centres and hosts the bi-monthly International Antique Fair at the Newark Showground, where other equally prestigious events and activities regularly take place. St Mary Magdalene, Newark’s medieval parish church with its magnificent spire is one of the largest and finest parish churches in the country. There is a hole visible in the spire marking the spot where the shot from a Parliamentarian cannon is said to have struck the church in 1664 during the Civil War. Newark has something for everyone, whether it’s a visit to one the numerous retailers – both chain and independent or to the thriving market; exploring the castle ruins; a river boat ride; a walk to the Sconce and Devon Park; a night of culture or entrainment at the Palace Theatre; a visit to the Newark Air Museum or coming in 2015, a visit to the new National Civil War Centre. Newark and the surrounding area is steeped in brewing history. Alas, it now has no major players left, but in the immediate area it has several excellent micro-breweries and has re-established itself on the map for having a range of establishments offering Real Ale. Newark is conveniently situated for Southwell and its Race Course, Minster and The National Trust’s Workhouse; Sherwood Forest and The Major Oak; The National Holocaust Centre and Museum at Laxton; The National Trust at Belton House (Grantham), Clumber Park and Mr Straw’s House (Worksop) whilst not forgetting the many attractions in Lincoln and Nottingham. The house has a front garden with parking facilities. The rear garden offers a well-kept space comprising of a large lawn, flower beds, shrubs and tree and provides guests with the possibility to have breakfast, lunch or, perhaps in the summer, supper, outdoors on the patio; where they can enjoy a beautiful and peaceful setting. The Lions is centrally located, being 10 minute walk from the market square and shops and is about 15 minute walk from either Newark North Gate or Castle Railway Stations. London is about one hour twenty minutes away by train and Lincoln and Nottingham are approximately thirty minutes away to the East and West, respectively. Bus can be caught to all the local towns and cities. Newark is situated close to the A1, A17 and A46 and so has excellent road links. East Midlands International Airport is thirty four miles away. The Lions offer four tastefully decorated rooms in a traditional style and provide comfortable beds with high quality bed linen and towels. The rooms all have flat screen, smart televisions that offer Freeview, Internet access and the facility to play CDs and DVDs; free access to Wi-Fi; tea and coffee making facilities; radio alarm clocks and hair dryers.
