The Rose Theatre, located on Bankside in Southwark, was the first purpose-built professional theatre and opened its doors in 1587, designed by Philip Henslowe. It became a significant cultural hub for playwrights, including Shakespeare, whose earliest tragedy, Titus Andronicus, was first performed here.
Rediscovered in 1989 during construction work, the archaeological remains of The Rose are now legally protected as a Scheduled Monument. Plans are underway to complete the excavation of the site and transform it into an exhibition and performance space called The Rose Revealed, celebrating the rich history of English drama.
