The Aitken Memorial Fountain, a cherished landmark of Govan Cross, was crafted in 1884 and is the sole surviving decorative cast iron drinking fountain from the Cruikshanks Co. foundry. Dedicated to the memory of Dr. John Aitken, a local physician known for his unwavering dedication to the community, the fountain has stood for over 120 years at Water Row.
Following years of deterioration, the fountain underwent a full restoration in 2011, supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Glasgow City Council. Despite recent challenges with rust, efforts to preserve and enhance this historic structure are ongoing, ensuring it remains a central feature of Govan's rich heritage for future generations.
