Hostel Accommodation In Campbeltown Campbeltown bunkhouse, opened in April 2012, is housed in the refurbished Old Schoolhouse, a Grade B listed building. There are two bunk rooms and guests stay on a self catering basis though tea and coffee are available.The bunkhouse in the grounds of Campbeltown Heritage Centre. The Bunkhouse location offers easy access to the facilities of Campbeltown (shops, restaurants, swimming pool and gym). A passenger/cycle ferry runs to Northern Ireland and Ayrshire while car ferries service the routes to the local islands of Arran, Gigha, Islay & Jura. For walking aficionados The Kintyre Way links the villages of Kintyre and offers spectacular views of the surrounding islands; Arran, Islay, Jura and Gigha. The area also enjoys very good wind surfing, surfing, in addition to mountain bike routes and other major cycle trails. A large swimming pool is located in the centre of Campbeltown, which also has sauna and gym facilities. Campbeltown is famous for whisky production with tours around Springbank Distillery or Glen Scotias Distillary. Kintyre is steeped in history sometimes known as the cradle of the scottish nation. St Columba came ashore at Southend from Northern Ireland bringing Christianity to Scotland. The cave where he lived is in Southend, as well as the site of “St Columba’s Footsteps” where he actually landed. Robert the Bruce spent time at the castle in Tarbert, and Dunaverty at Southend. Why not walk on the beach at Saddell where Paul McCartney and Wings recorded the video for “Mull of Kintyre”. Wildlife is abundant in the area, with otters and seals all around the area, buzzards and even golden eagles flying overhead, as well as plenty sightings of red deer, roe deer and sika deer. Wild goats wander the island of Davaar, outside Campbeltown. This island is only available to visit at low tide across a shingle walkway, so check with the local Tourist Office for tide times. On the island is a cave painting of the Crucifixion, painted by a local artist in the early 20th century and renewed by a local artist around 2008.
