Newington Cemetery, originally named Newington Necropolis, was established in 1846 and designed by architect David Cousin. This 14-acre site serves as a tranquil green haven in the heart of an urban area, featuring notable graves, a War Memorial, and Commonwealth war graves from both World Wars.

In 1994, the cemetery was acquired by Edinburgh City Council due to its overgrown state and is currently undergoing restoration efforts supported by the local community. The northwest section has been designated as a wildlife area to promote biodiversity, with maintenance activities limited to encourage the local ecosystem.
