The Black Bull Inn, Moffat is reputed to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest hostelry in Scotland. Built in 1568 it is certainly steeped in history. At one time it was the headquarters of the Earl of Dundee and his company of Dragoons; nicknamed ‘Bloody Cleavers’ for their persecution of Scottish Presbyterians. In more peaceful times it was a favourite watering hole for the bard Robert Burns who once engraved a pane of glass with some locally-inspired verses; the original pane now being in St Petersburg after it was presented to the future Tsar Nicholas I in 1817. Black Bull is now a luxurious 15 bedroom boutique hotel, boasting all modern facilities, without losing any of its natural charm. You will also find an exciting range of cask & craft ales & a wide selection of local gins and whiskeys. Those dining will enjoy a fantastic experience; whether inside or on our outside terrace. Our menu features only the very best ingredients paired with an exciting traditional Scottish menu.
