St. Illtyd's Church, located in Llanhilleth, is the oldest building in northwest Gwent, believed to have origins dating back to the fifth century. Traditionally, it was first a wooden structure before being rebuilt by Cistercian monks in the late twelfth century, with much of the current fabric dating from that period.
The church is a Grade II listed building and underwent significant renovations in the mid-19th century, including the addition of a bell tower and an attractive cradle ceiling. Though it was closed in 1957 due to nearby coal mining and fell into disrepair, the church remains a site of historical interest for the local community.
