Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark is a significant site that showcases the best remaining example of early 20th Century copper mining in Glennallen, Alaska. Acquired by the National Park Service in 1998, Kennecott is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark. The impressive structures and artifacts in the mill town and mines tell stories of exploration, technological innovation, and the rise of a multinational corporation.
Once a self-contained company town, Kennecott had a hospital, general store, school, skating rink, tennis court, recreation hall, and dairy. From 1911 to 1938, the operation processed nearly $200 million worth of copper. Today, the National Park Service, along with the local community and Friends of Kennicott, is working to stabilize and rehabilitate the historic buildings to preserve the site's integrity for future generations to explore and enjoy.
