The Phoenix Police Department provides law enforcement services to more than 1.2 million residents within an area of over 469 square miles in Phoenix. Its air support unit provides effective airborne surveillance and patrol support to bureaus and precincts of the police department. The department s Citizen's Police Academy provides instruction on several topics, including police ethics, radio communication, traffic laws, and drug and gang enforcement. It employs more than 2,600 police officers and detectives and over 700 civil support staff personnel. The department offers a law enforcement explorer program that is developed and supervised by the local community organizations, businesses and individuals to provide an opportunities for young adults to explore particular career fields. The Phoenix Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
