Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, nestled in the Little San Bernardino Mountains, is a renowned desert oasis and one of California's largest cottonwood and willow riparian stream habitats. With its diverse landscape spanning 31,000 acres and elevations ranging from 600 to 3000 feet, the preserve is a vital part of the Morongo Basin's natural and cultural history. It is internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area, attracting numerous rare and unusual bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Devoted to the exploration, preservation, and stewardship of the preserve, Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is dedicated to protecting and managing its resources. They offer educational programs, access for wildlife viewing, and recreational opportunities for visitors to enjoy this unique ecosystem. The preserve, which was incorporated into the Sand to Snow National Monument in 2016, is currently recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Hilary, and donations are welcomed to aid in the restoration of its trails and boardwalk.
