Jonathan Blum

History

I began teaching fiction-writing classes in the Los Angeles area in Winter 2015. Before opening my business, I taught fiction writing for nine years at the University of Iowa, The Iowa Summer Writing Festival, and Drew University. I am a graduate of UCLA and The Iowa Writers' Workshop. Over the years, I have taught hundreds of fiction-writing students, many of whom have gone on to publish their work and enroll in highly regarded M.F.A. programs in fiction writing.

Specialties

I teach fiction writing classes for students of all levels of experience. Class size is limited to ten. I offer six-week, two-month, and one-day classes. Classes meet in Pasadena, Larchmont, and Santa Monica. Courses are typically offered on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. My classes tend to take a craft-based approach. We study in-depth use of structure, characterization, setting, language, and many other elements of fiction. Some classes are workshops, where the group discusses each writer's work. Others are generative classes, where there is no critiquing, only creating new writing.
