History
Malasa recently debuted as San Francisco's newest pop-up Modern Filipino restaurant. Located in the Sunset District on bustling 9th Avenue and Irving Streets, it is generating a lot of excitement and curiosity from all foodies alike, who were previously deprived of good Filipino restaurants in the city. Malasa (translates to tasty, in Tagalog) combines traditional and classic heritage recipes using modern techniques and execution. The restaurant and Chef pride themselves on using as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible to showcase the bounty of California produce.
Specialties
The restaurant and Chef pride themselves on using as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible to showcase the bounty of California produce. For the silogs (garlic rice plates) a weekend specialty, only organic, cage-free pasture-raised eggs are used (happy chickens make beautiful eggs, after all). Lines of people queue up for dishes such as tocilog, a sweet, cured pork delicacy served with a fried egg on top of garlic fried rice and pickled vegetables. Kare-kare, another signature dish - features tender, unctuous pieces of oxtail slowly braised and reduced in a rich peanut sauce, served with bagoong, a fermented shrimp paste, and market vegetables. Malasa serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm.
