Tongue Point Light, also known as "The Bug," is a historic lighthouse located on Bridgeport Harbor's western shore in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Standing at just 31 feet tall, this little black lighthouse has withstood the test of time and even served as a testing ground for a failed invention. It was constructed in 1895 and played a crucial role in protecting the harbor from the increased shipping traffic brought by the arrival of the rail line in the 1840s.
The lighthouse features a conical, cast-iron tower with a winding staircase leading to the watchroom and lantern room. Initially tended by Keeper Stephen A. McNeil, the lighthouse later had Flora McNeil as its keeper, making her Bridgeport's only female lighthouse keeper. Despite the challenges of attending to the light, including treacherous winter trips on icy planks, the lighthouse has remained an important landmark in Bridgeport's maritime history.
