The Polk County Building Division reviews applications for building and construction permits for compliance with applicable building codes. The division permits and conducts inspection of new construction sites and remodeled properties. It also inspects the repair of mobile homes and single-family residences. The division issues contractor licenses and investigates complaints against licensed contractors. It is a part of the Polk County, Fla., which also operates business development, code enforcement, community health and social services, land development and fleet management divisions. With its main office in Bartow, Fla., the Polk County Building Division maintains satellite offices in Winter Haven and Lakeland, Fla.

The Office of the Public Defender for the Tenth Judicial Circuit offers a range of judicial services to the citizens of Polk, Highlands, and Hardee counties in Florida. It represents indigent individuals charged with crimes. The office also provides various appellate services to individuals with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities and personality disorders. The Office of the Public Defender for the Tenth Judicial Circuit arrests law violators and offers indigency screening services. The office maintains a department of juvenile justice and juvenile detention center. It conducts detention, adjudicatory and disposition hearing procedures, as well as files formal charges. In addition, the office prepares defense cases and administers various commitment programs.
