Before earning her medical degree from Universidad de La Sabana in Colombia, Dr. Guaqueta completed two research fellowships at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine – one in the Center for Liver Disease and the other at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Her clinical training includes an internal medicine internship and residency at Tufts University School of Medicine, Steward Carney Hospital in Boston and a hematology oncology fellowship at Boston University, Boston Medical Center. She also received training in clinical trial development strategies from Harvard Medical School and clinical cancer genomics from the City of Hope Division of Clinical Cancer Genomics in Duarte, Calif. Using a team-frame approach, Dr. Guaqueta partners with her patients and their families to review treatment options, discuss their pros and cons and consider both standard-of-care recommendations and potential clinical trials. She offers patients and families compassion, acceptance and respect as they work together to establish the goals of therapy and accomplish those goals. Dr. Guaqueta is fluent in English and Spanish. When she is not treating patients, she spends her time traveling, exploring new countries and cultures, hiking and connecting with nature. She also enjoys running and often runs races to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Her seven years of clinical training included a neurology internship and residency as well as a neuro-oncology fellowship, all completed at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. During her clinical training, Dr. Hooks served as resident wellness program developer and chief, published her work in scientific journals, presented at institutional academic conferences and taught in didactic settings. Dr. Hooks believes that every patient deserves care that is not only scientifically advanced but also deeply compassionate. She emphasizes patient-centered communication, shared decision-making and holistic support for patients and their families. She strives to combine evidence-based treatment with a strong focus on quality of life, recognizing that trust, clarity and compassion are as important as innovation in neuro-oncology.
