Florida LAKEWATCH is a citizen volunteer lake monitoring program administered by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Established in 1986 and recognized by the Florida Legislature in 1991, it engages over 1,800 trained citizens in the monitoring of lakes, estuaries, rivers, and springs across the state.
This extensive program currently oversees data collection from 525 lakes, 175 estuary stations, 125 river stations, 20 coastal dune lakes, and 10 spring runs in 57 counties, making it one of the largest lake monitoring initiatives in the nation. LAKEWATCH fosters hands-on citizen participation in managing Florida's aquatic resources through monthly monitoring activities.
