The Chicago Police Department is a full-service public agency located in Chicago. The department works to safeguard the lives and property of residents, businesses and visitors, as well as maintain social law and order. It works with a team of more than 13,400 sworn police officers and over 1,850 civilian employees. The Chicago Police Department maintains a canine unit that conducts building searches for hidden offenders, locates missing persons, tracks suspects who have fled from the scene of crime, performs article searches, and detects narcotics and explosives. The department offers services that include education and training, internal investigations and the evaluation of management activities and operations. It also deals with legal affairs, media relations and the development of crime strategies.
