Founded in 1912, the company began in St. Louis, John S. Swift runs five North American locations including Buffalo Grove, Ill., Emeryville, Calif., Omaha, Neb., East Rutherford, N.J. and Cincinnati.

First published in Scotland as a three-volume set in the 1770s, Encyclopaedia Britannica first came to the U.S. as a pirated edition. By the time the encyclopedia was in its 14th edition in 1929, its operations had moved to the U.S. permanently. Today the Encyclopedia Britannica is published as a 32-volume set, as well as in CD-ROM form. The traditional hardback edition sells for more than $1,200 per set.
