Founded in 1971, Shawnee Health Service is a private, nonprofit corporation that provides health and social services to people in southern Illinois and southwest Indiana. It operates various community health centers that offer medical, dental and behavioral health services. Its health centers employ physicians, dentists, psychiatrists and nurses. They additionally provide medical and social services for obstetrics, gynecology, chronic disease management, and adolescent and mental health. Shawnee Health Service also provides short-term supportive counseling services to older adults. It employs protective services specialists who respond to reports of sexual and emotional abuse, confinement, neglect and financial exploitation in the community of persons above 60 years.
