I t is rumored that Joe's Place first opened during prohibition. Officially founded in 1934 in what is now Iowa City's pedestrian mall, "Joe, " the original owner, moved his place to its current location at 115 Iowa Avenue in 1939. In August 2003, Joe's encountered a set back when a neighboring business caught fire and spread into the bar during the early morning. In 2004, Joe's was renovated, expanded and reopened with a second service bar featuring a beer garden and windows that open to allow an outdoor atmosphere throughout the entire room. Now, after one fire, several remodelings, an infinite number of staff turnovers and over 75 years of customer service, Joe's Place continues to celebrate its spot as an Iowa City institution.
