Founded in 1928 by Carl Ray Sr., the company was operated by him until his death in 1983. Originally based in St. Matthews, Carl Ray Nursery has always been known for growing and installing specimen-quality plant material. The company is still family-operated and owned by Mike Ray, the founder's grandson.In 1988, Carl Ray Nursery moved from its original location to nearby Eastwood. In addition, a second nursery location in Finchville now provides much of the material used in their landscapes. The use of this locally-grown material greatly enhances the success rate of their installed nursery stock.
