Historical Research Center

The Historical Research Center in Thibodaux, LA is an essential institution that ensures the proper housing and recording of sacramental records in accordance with Canon Law. With a collection of over half of the original church registers from the 39 church parishes within its jurisdiction, the Archive holds records dating back to the late 1700s, with volumes prior to 1950 stored on microfilm. The Center is dedicated to preserving the ancestral background of individuals and providing easy access to stored data through computer entry and backup, while still recognizing the importance of maintaining mandatory hand-written registers.

As the Archivist, the Center has undergone positive changes to benefit both church parishes and those interested in researching their family history. Established in 1977, the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux was formed from a division of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and the Center plays a crucial role in safeguarding and organizing the sacramental records that hold significant historical value for the community.
