Originally, on the site now occupied by The Cutty Sark Motel, there stood a gracious beach home that was purchased by Edward Hughes who eventually enlarged the facility to accommodate the burgeoning York Beach hospitality community. As the business and the family grew, other accommodations for the family were acquired and the motel building was further enhanced, a second three-story building was erected.
