Christopher Tan, MD

Dr. James Fackler is a professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include acute respiratory distress syndrome, novel respiratory therapies, and critical care informatics.Dr. Fackler received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Illinois and earned his M.D. from Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed his residencies in pediatrics and anesthesiology and then fellowships in pediatric intensive care and pediatric anesthesia at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His first faculty position was at the Children's Hospital in Boston where he was an early leader in use of the internet for health data exchange and critical care monitoring.Dr. Fackler returned to the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1996 to run the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation program and Respiratory Therapy.He took a "sabbatical" from 2002 to 2006 and worked for the Cerner Corporation developing their critical care and device integration solutions. He has founded three health care informatics-based startups and consults for other device and information integration companies.Dr. Fackler's research interests include optimizing team performance in pediatric critical care. He has mentored pediatric residents, critical care fellows, and biomedical engineering undergrads, Masters and PhD students. His current major focus is on sepsis.He serves as an associate editor for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and as an ad hoc journal reviewer for many notable publications including New England Journal of Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. He is a member of American Association of Artificial Intelligence, American Medical Informatics Association and the Society for Critical Care Medicine. He helped found, and is on the Board of the non-profit, Machine Learning for Healthcare.Dr. Fackler is a frequent lecturer and panelist on the subject of critical care informatics. He is an expert in data integration and its use.

Dr. David Valle is a professor of pediatrics and ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and former director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Genetic Medicine. He also serves as a geneticist for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.Dr. Valle holds a bachelor’s degree and medical degree from Duke University. He completed a pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins University before joining the Johns Hopkins faculty. He is interested in the genetic contributions to health and disease. He is the founding director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Inherited Disease Research. Over the years, his laboratory has discovered the genetic causation for more than 20 diseases, including those responsible for inborn errors of metabolism, inherited retinal degeneration, disorders of cellular organelle biogenesis and genetic variations that contribute risk for common disorders such as schizophrenia.Dr. Valle also serves as director of the Predoctoral Training Program in Human Genetics, as well as co-director of the Genes to Society program. He was a 2014 recipient of the annual Victor A. McKusick Leadership Award from the American Society of Human Genetics, which recognizes individuals whose professional achievements have fostered and enriched the development of human genetics as well as its assimilation into the broader context of science, medicine and health.

Dr. B. Douglas Smith is an Oncologist in Baltimore caring for patients with leukemias and other blood and bone marrow disorders and he is recognized nationally as an expert in the care of patients with these disorders and as a leader in novel therapeutics for these conditions. Dr. Smith serves as the Co-Director of Clinical Research Operations for the Division of Hematologic Malignancies and helps to manage the Division’s clinical research trials.Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Lafayette College (Easton, PA), earned his M.D. at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA), completed his Residency at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), and Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, MD). Dr. Smith joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1998 at the completion of his training.His main research interests include drug development for patients with AML, CML, and MDS and he serves as Co-Investigator for the Oncology Center’s UM1 (early phase drug development) Grant. The Leukemia Program’s clinical trials portfolio has included trials for each of the 8 newly FDA-approved drugs for acute leukemia in the past 2 years. Dr. Smith has a passion for teaching trainees and has served on the Fellowship Executive Committee since 2010 focusing on the program’s educational platforms. He has won numerous teaching awards in both the Department of Oncology and the Department of Medicine multiple times, and he has a track record of mentoring fellows pursuing clinical-translational research and clinician-educator pathways. In 2020, Dr. Smith was awarded membership in the prestigious Miller Coulson Academy for Excellence in Clinical Care.He is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. He has served on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guideline panel for CML since 2001 and previously served on the AML panel from 2001-2015. Dr. Smith has extensive experience in the regulatory aspects of drug development and he currently serves as the Chair of the Johns Hopkins Institutional Review Board #2.
