Dr. W. Reid Thompson is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include pediatric cardiology, cardiomyopathy, muscular dystrophy, and echocardiography. Dr. Thompson is a member of the pediatric cardiovascular team at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Johns Hopkins.Dr. Thompson was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina, where he was also Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his M.D. from the Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and performed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at The Children’s Hospital – Harvard Medical School.Dr. Thompson's research interests include evaluation of ventricular function in patients with muscular dystrophy, Barth syndrome, and status post chemotherapy. He also studies novel methods of teaching and diagnosing heart disease through cardiac auscultation. Dr. Thompson is a physician at the Johns Hopkins Hospital as well as the Kennedy Krieger Institute. He was awarded an Individual National Research Service Award by the National Institutes of Health. He was also an American Heart Association Bugher Fellow and a Child Health Research Center New Program Development Awardee.

Mary Beth Brady is associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is internationally known as an expert in Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) and serves as the Johns Hopkins University director of the Intraoperative and Structural Heart TEE Program. Under Dr Brady’s directorship, the Johns Hopkins cardiac anesthesiology team provides real-time interventional echocardiography guidance for structural heart procedures, including percutaneous mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valve repair/replacements – as well as for left atrial appendage procedures. For years, Dr. Brady has been on the forefront of educational initiatives on TEE education. Dr. Brady is engaged in TEE education for trainees in cardiac anesthesiology, anesthesiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, and ultrasonography. On a national and international level, she has spoken extensively on echocardiography. Dr. Brady serves as the Vice Chair for Education for the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. In this role, she coordinates educational initiatives across the multiple Johns Hopkins campuses. She is also medical director of the Adult Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Johns Hopkins. Dr Brady is active in the American Society of Echocardiography and as of June 2024, was appointed Chair-Elect of its Interventional Echocardiography Council. She is the first anesthesiologist to hold this position. Interventional Echocardiography refers to real-time imaging guidance for device placement and immediate functional evaluation in structural heart procedures. Dr Brady is chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Educational Track Subcommittee on Cardiac Anesthesia. In April 2024, Dr Brady was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA). The SCA is an international organization of physicians that promotes excellence in patient care through education and research in perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular procedures. In her role of Secretary/Treasurer, Dr Brady joins the SCA Executive Board, comprised of 4 individuals: Secretary/Treasurer, President Elect, President and Immediate Past President. She is also a member of the SCA Board of Directors. Dr. Brady served as chair of the SCA Scientific Program Committee for its flagship meetings in 2023 and 2024. In 2024, she completed a 4-year tenure on the SCA Board of Directors. Dr. Brady received her undergraduate and medical degrees at Georgetown University. She completed a residency in anesthesiology and a combined fellowship in cardiac anesthesia and vascular-thoracic anesthesia at Johns Hopkins and then joined our faculty in ACCM. More than once, she has won the “Most Innovative Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching” awarded by the department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Brady joined the editorial board of Open Anesthesia (OA) as part of the inaugural board for this multimodal internet toolkit sponsored by the International Anesthesia Research Society. The mission of OA is to offer unique educational tools for residents, fellows, and medical students with an interest in Anesthesiology. It has become the comprehensive resource for anesthesiology residents and physicians worldwide. Dr. Brady completed her OA Board of Director service in 2022. Dr. Brady is a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography and serves on the editorial board of Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.
