J. Danny Muehlschlegel, MD, MMSc, MBA, FAHA, FASA is an attending cardiovascular anesthesiologist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he serves as the Director (Chair) of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. He is also a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Mark C. Rogers Professor.As a cardiac anesthesiologist with significant subspecialty training in all aspects of cardiac disease and transesophageal echocardiography, Dr. Muehlschlegel is a perioperative physician guiding the care of very sick patients with cardiovascular disease. Dr. Muehlschlegel is an NIH-funded physician-scientist with an active laboratory examining the impact of genetic variation upon adverse cardiovascular events and their significance on a functional level. He is the principal investigator of the CABG Genomics study group and the PI of the NHLBI-sponsored TRANSCRIBE (transcriptomic analysis of left ventricular gene expression) study. Both studies aim to determine the relationship between genetic variation and perioperative myocardial injury in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Dr. Muehlschlegel is also the principal investigator of the NHLBI-sponsored GENEXPRO Surg (Gene Expression Profiling in Subjects with Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation after Cardiac Surgery) which aims to characterize the left atrium, the site in proximity to the origination of atrial fibrillation, using a multi ‘omics approach.Among his leadership roles, Muehlschlegel serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and is a member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists, and on the leadership committee of the American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia. He is also an associate oral board examiner of the American Board of Anesthesiology, which will allow him to contribute to, and have a national impact on the specialty of anesthesiology.

Matthew Ippolito, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Director of Clinical Epidemiology for the Southern and Central Africa International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR). He received his A.B. from Dartmouth College and his M.D. from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he received his Ph.D. in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also served in the Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa. Dr. Ippolito specializes in global health and tropical infectious diseases with a research focus on malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. His NIH-supported research program explores the clinical pharmacology of antimalarial drugs and the genetic epidemiology of drug resistance. In his role as Director of Clinical Epidemiology for the Southern and Central Africa ICEMR, Dr. Ippolito designs and oversees clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies of malaria. Dr. Ippolito also serves as a Phase I and II clinical trialist for the LONGEVITY consortium, established to develop and deploy long-acting nanoformulations of essential anti-infective drugs. He is also a co-developer of a computer vision-based machine learning platform for malaria diagnostic and research applications, and serves on the editorial board of Frontiers in Malaria.

Katherine Chang Chretien is Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs and Director of Medical Student Wellness. She is a general internal medicine physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.Prior to coming to Johns Hopkins in these roles in 2021, Katherine was Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Professor of Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences where she served as a career advisory dean, oversaw the Office for Financial Aid and the Scholarly Concentration Program, and co-chaired the Dean's Wellness Committee. Katherine worked clinically as a hospitalist physician at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 18 years and was medicine clerkship site director for George Washington (10 years) and the first division chief for Hospital Medicine (2010-2016).She served as President of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) from 2019-2020, and is on the Northeast Group of Student Affairs AAMC Steering Committee (Executive Committee 2017-2022; NEGSA Chair 2020-2021; Northeast Representative to the national Committee on Student Affairs 2022- ). She is the recipient of the Charles H. Griffith III Educational Research Award from CDIM and the Women Leaders in Medicine Award from the American Medical Students Association. Katherine graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Osler Medical Residency. Her academic focus has been on social media in medicine, medical education, narrative medicine, and well-being. She is the editor of the book Mothers in Medicine: Career, Practice, and Life Lessons Learned (Springer, 2018) based on the group blog she founded in 2008 and author of the book I Wish I Read This Book Before Medical School (Peterson's, 2021). Katherine became a certified Life Coach in July 2023.
