ECMO, which stands for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, is an advanced technology that functions as a replacement for a critically ill child's heart and lungs. It's used to support a child who is awaiting surgery, or to give a child's vital organs time to recover from heart surgery or disease. The ECMO Program is housed within the hospital's Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Here, a multi-disciplinary team of cardiac intensive care unit physicians, nurses and specially trained respiratory therapists provide customized ECMO care for each child they treat. Specialists in pediatric infectious diseases, pulmonary disease and pediatric neurology also are readily available to help manage and monitor cardiac ECMO patients.

Critical Care Medicine's primary clinical activities occur in the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU). The MSICU is one of the highest volume pediatric intensive care units in the United States, with 30 beds and more than 2,000 admissions annually. The MSICU provides care for infants and children with all types of medical and surgical conditions except for cardiac surgery, with specific expertise in the care of patients with neurologic and oncologic diseases (including stem cell transplant recipients). Critical Care Medicine has a unique collaboration with the Department of Surgery, with surgeons trained in critical care providing coverage in the MSICU.

The Center for Congenital Abnormalities of the Reproductive Tract at Boston Children's Hospital provides medical, surgical, obstetrical and psychosocial consultation and care to girls, adolescents and adult women, from birth to age 22, with congenital or acquired structural abnormalities of the reproductive tract.
