Meredith Wierman Schmidt, DO-Three Rivers Health Hospital

About Dr. WiermanMeredith K. Wierman, D.O., grew up in a family of medical providers. Her mother and grandmother were nurses and her father a physician. When she was a child, her family moved to Rwanda where her parents ran a small hospital and they lived on the hospital grounds. Later, her father had a pretty large private practice in a small town. I think I knew at an early age that I wanted a career in medicine after watching my father take care of so many people in my small town, she says. Her fathers practice was just part of their life. We grew up with patients calling our house and dropping by the house to get looked at or to get advice, she says. I would go with my father after church on Sunday to do house calls and check on certain patients; I still remember those days very well. Her interest in microbiology led her to become an internist who specializes in infectious diseases. She did her internal medicine training in Detroit where she recalls they saw a lot of patients with very complex and interesting infections and infectious diseases. I have always been interested in microbiology, she says. It has always been fascinating to me that with all of our advances in medicine and science, that we still have these microscopic organisms that are a major threat in the human body. With advanced technology, X-rays and laboratory work readily available, Dr. Wierman says she still thinks listening to a patient or their family is the most important thing in medicine. I want my patients to know that my first goal is to listen to them and really try to hear what they are telling me, she says. Listening is so much more important than the provider talking. In her own wordsWho is or was the most influential people/role models in your life?My parents; they are very hard workers and have always taught me to stand up for what is right. What was your first job growing up? Muhammad Uzair Saqlain, MD-Three Rivers Health Hospital

Dr. M. Uzair Saqlain sees himself as a coach as much as he is an oncologist."Oncology is a specialty where you develop a strong and special bond with your patients," Dr. Saqlain said. "That bond often begins in the most difficult and uncertain time for our patients and together we form a team with the ultimate goal of returning them to their lives."While Dr. Saqlain realized his passion for medicine early in high school, he did not decide to pursue oncology until his residency in the U.S. "I am inspired by the strength, determination and courage of patients undergoing cancer treatment," he said. "People ask me why I chose a specialty that is sometimes emotionally taxing. I feel this is the most satisfying job, because I am able to help patients when others might lose hope."Like many physicians, Dr. Saqlain has learned to listen carefully to his patients, because the details they share are often better than tests. Medicine today is not one-sided. "My greatest hope is that patients find me approachable and honest. I coach and guide, but they are in charge," he said. "I am driven by the desire to help them at their most vulnerable time, hold their hand and guide them on their journey."In his own words:What was your favorite subject in school and your worst subject? I loved biology and zoology, but I did not enjoy math. As I look back, I think it may be because everyone in my family was superb at math so it was a lot of pressure. What was your first job? I started building gaming computers for my friends and relatives. What book is on your nightstand? "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi. It's a memoir about his life and fight against stage IV metastatic lung cancer. What do you enjoy outside of work? I like to explore technology, especially smart homes and automation. I listen to music when I have time. I'm a country music fan.
