Tom's Food Markets is a chain of retail grocery stores that originally began as Deering's Market in 1946 in Traverse City, Mich. This was a small store and specialized as a butcher shop. It was in 1953 that the store took on the name of Tom s Food Markets. Since the 1960 s Tom s Food Markets has grown to four grocery stores in Traverse City, with two more stores in Northport and Williamsburg, Mich. Its corporate office is located in Traverse City, Mich. Tom's Food Markets is a recognized community leader in the Grand Traverse Area, creating a shopping environment its customers enjoy and offering a broad variety of quality consumer products. The stores still specialize in meat products. It is affiliated with Spartan Stores. Spartan Stores distribute national and Spartan brand products to more than 330 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Spartan Stores was founded in 1917 and was originally a cooperative, changing to profit in the 1970s. Every December Tom s Food Markets offers cut Christmas trees.
