I think the most important characteristics for a primary care physician to have are compassion and empathy. Each patient is an individual and coming to you from different places in their life, so they're coming with not only a medical concern, but they have emotional, spiritual and social needs as well. So having that empathy and leaving judgment at the door is really important.

For patients who haven't met me yet, I'd like for them to know that I'm there to listen. We may not get to every single problem that you have at every visit, but I want to hear what you have to say and answer your questions and address your concerns. The more that patients work with me, the more that hopefully they'll understand I'm there to help educate them so they can make educated decisions about their health.
