Keata grew up in Dallas, Texas. She moved to Tennessee after receiving a degree in Music from the University of TN in 1980. She went on to receive an Associates degree in Nursing from Union University, Jackson TN in 1987 and began working as an RN in the hospital setting. In 1994, she received a Bachelors in Nursing from Union University and in 1995 received a Masters in Nursing from U.T. Memphis. Keata has extensive experience in spanning almost 30 years in Acute Care and primary care. She have five children and eleven grandchildren and her family is of utmost importance to her .
