When people in the Omaha, Neb. area hear the name Vala s Pumpkin Patch they immediately conjure up images of pumpkin fields full of bright orange pumpkins, hayrack rides and grilling hot dogs. It all began in 1981, when Tim and Jan Vala began looking for land to develop into a pick-your-own farm operation. Every year 50 acres of pumpkins are planted, all to sell directly to people visiting the farm. Hayrack rides and campfires are a popular attraction for church groups, birthday parties, corporate events, scout groups and campfire retreats. School groups visit the farm on weekdays. Vala's makes special pumpkin chocolate chip cookies as well as caramel apples at Kelsey's Sweet Shoppe. Vala s Pumpkin Patch is located in Gretna, Neb., just outside of Omaha.
