Diana Vargas, MD

Minyoung Jang, MD is a fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologist at New York-Presbyterian/ Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. She treats the entire spectrum of ear, nose/sinus, and throat disorders in children of all ages. Her special interests include the management of pediatric airway and voice disorders, hearing loss, and neck masses including salivary, thyroid and vascular anomalies. Dr. Jang received her bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. During medical school, she was selected to perform translational research at the National Institutes of Health through the Medical Scholars Research Program. She subsequently completed her residency training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Boston University’s Boston Medical Center, and her fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Jang is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. She is the author or co-author of several journal articles and textbook chapters, and regularly presents her research at national meetings. She believes that every child is unique, and enjoys working with families to provide the best possible care that is right for them. I entered the field of pediatric nephrology with a passion for working with infants, children, and adolescents with kidney disease. I was drawn to this special population because I enjoy the ongoing relationships that I have with my patients. It is a privilege to help educate children, parents, and fellow pediatricians about the kidneys and their role in nutrition, growth, and development. I treat children of all ages, from infancy to young adulthood. My specific area of interest is disorders of the kidney filters—the glomeruli—which clean the blood by filtering out excess fluid and waste products. When these filters are injured, children can have blood or protein in their urine, a sign that the kidneys are not functioning properly. In addition to cleaning the blood, the kidneys help control growth, prevent anemia, and regulate blood pressure. I work closely with patients and parents to optimize nutrition, hydration, and medications to help the kidneys perform their very important roles! My research interests are also focused on diseases of the glomeruli, specifically on patients who have received kidney transplants, and I am looking at how to optimize their success and keep them as healthy as possible post-transplantation. I am also very involved in training and inspiring future pediatric nephrologists. I work closely with medical students and pediatricians-in-training to educate them on the management of patients with kidney disorders and how to safely treat and help them thrive.

My interest in pediatric pulmonology stems from my early pediatric training, where I first learned about the wide spectrum of respiratory diseases that affect children. I recognized the unique opportunity I would have as a pulmonologist to make a difference in young people's lives. During a pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, I developed a strong foundation in a variety of respiratory issues, and in my current practice I diagnose and treat children of all ages with lung conditions including asthma, chronic lung disorders of infancy, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypoplasia, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity-related pulmonary diseases, and pulmonary dysfunction in musculoskeletal disorders. My patients come from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds and I strive to provide culturally sensitive and evidence-based clinical care. At Columbia, I am part of a team with unique expertise with performing pulmonary function and exercise physiology tests to assess our patients. We also work closely with other specialties to manage children and adolescents with complex conditions. I am also involved in research and educational activities. I have studied long-term pulmonary complications in children with sickle cell disease and congenital diaphragmatic hernia, as well as in those who are undergoing cancer therapy or stem cell transplantation. I am member of national committees and networks of experts who study rare lung disorders. I am engaged in clinical trials of new drug therapies for children with interstitial lung diseases, and am also actively engaged in pediatric asthma research. Additionally, I lead the pulmonology fellowship training program here at Columbia, through which we teach and train the next generation of physicians to become future leaders in pediatric pulmonology.
