Founded in 1916, Empire Recycling Corporation is one of the largest recycling centers for metal and paper products in the United States. It serves manufacturers, municipalities, individuals, small and large businesses and other organizations. The company processes nonferrous and ferrous metal, as well as scrap paper products. Empire Recycling Corporation operates a division, Syracuse Materials Recovery, which recycles nonferrous and ferrous metal products from small businesses, such as plumbers, electricians, contractors and individuals. In addition, it operates Hudson Metal and Empire Seneca.

Located in Utica, N.Y., Oneida-Herkimer Recycling Center is a part of the Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority. The authority s services include waste disposal and waste and recyclable collection. It recycles computer equipment, household garbage, tires, trash items, automobile and alkaline batteries, motor oil filters, anti-freeze, propane cylinders, hardcover books, kitchen grease and oil and residential medical sharps. The authority also promotes composting. Additionally, it provides various landfill options and accepts solid waste products of commercial establishments and industries, construction and demolition debris, sludge and residues from recycling, composting, incineration and other waste processing technologies. It organizes a variety of programs on recycling.
