This is one of a number of sculptures by Thomas Sayre, many of them large, concrete circles of some kind. This one evokes the area's furniture industry as well as its red clay. It's impressive.

Lenoir High School in Lenoir, North Carolina, is a historic high school complex and national historic district that was designed by the architectural firm Benton Benton in 1922. The two-story Classical Revival-style brick school features cast stone detailing and an original stone retaining wall, with a band building added in 1935-1937 and an additional wing in 1962. After closing its doors in 1977 and serving as Willow St Middle School until 1981, the property was transformed into a senior housing facility in 1989.
