Medicine is the perfect blend of many of my passions. I have always loved science, and want to be constantly learning new things. Medicine is forever evolving, giving me endless opportunities to keep learning. I am also committed to advocating for people and serving my community. Medicine is one of the best ways I can see to serve. \n I am dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for all patients regardless of their background, sexual orientation or gender identity. I place a strong emphasis on preventive medicine; I believe that proactive and collaborative care plans empower people to live their healthiest lives. \n My home team includes my husband and our two kids. Together we enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling to experience other cultures. I also spend much of my free time working as a guardian ad litem, a court-appointed advocate for children taken into the court system for abuse or neglect. To stay active, I love running and am a marathon runner. I often use my passion for endurance racing to support causes close to my heart.

Both my parents in the medical profession so, I observed first-hand the fulfillment they got from caring for their patients and their families. They were an inspiring example. Neither pushed me into medicine, but I wanted the same satisfaction they got from their careers. \n I was drawn to surgery as an avenue to impact someone's health after - and even before - the procedure. Surgery, and specifically colorectal surgery, is a field with plentiful opportunities to help patients with issues ranging from inflammatory bowel disease to cancer to diverticulitis. \n Being a physician allows me to blend my love of science and my desire to help people lead healthier lives. Medicine connects people with science - and, for me, there's nothing better. \n I want to be part of my patients' journeys to better health, so I approach healthcare in a patient-driven manner. I work to ensure my patients understand their diagnosis and the treatment plan we develop together. (I always want my patients to be actively engaged in their care.) My commitment to continuous learning, skill development and attention to detail leads to good outcomes and patient satisfaction. \n I'm a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. \n My wife, Katherine, and I live in Winston-Salem with our son and daughter. Outside the office, there's no one I'd rather spend time with than my family - and our dog. We enjoy playgrounds, hiking and walking and all types of sports - whether we're playing or just watching. I also enjoy cooking and grilling for a big group of family and friends.
