Charles T. Burke, MD

Hello! I grew up in Durham, NC and completed medical school and residency at UNC Chapel Hill. I have a strong commitment to serving the patients of North Carolina. It is my goal to help you understand your disease and treatment options to help you make choices that best fit your priorities. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking and traveling with my wife, daughter and dog.

I have devoted my career as a physician to treating patients with multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders and other immune-mediated central nervous system disorders. Using a personalized and multidisciplinary treatment approach, I have been providing neurological care at the highest professional level, aiming to improve functionality and quality of life in my patients. My professional philosophy has not been only based on reaching and maintaining a high level of expertise in the field, but also on honesty, trust and empathy as the basis for the successful physician-patient relationship.

I chose to become a doctor because it is a gift to be able to journey with patients during their times of need and creatively offer my medical expertise to help make that journey a little bit easier. Through a variety of experiences during and after college, I discovered that I am most inspired when I am able to build authentic relationships with others. At its core, medicine is about spending time with patients, learning their stories, and building trust. In doing so, physicians have the privilege of partnering with patients to help them live healthy and meaningful lives, even in the face of immense suffering. I work with patients and families who are living with serious illness, with a focus on symptom management and maximizing quality of life. I enjoy learning what is most important to my patients and incorporating their goals into their care plans. Philosophically, I believe in whole-person care and rely on working in collaboration with an inter-professional team to ensure comprehensive care (physical, emotional, spiritual, etcetera) is offered to each individual patient. My areas of special interest include hospice and palliative medicine and palliative care for oncology. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two little girls. I love hiking in the woods, playing pickup basketball and reading too much about college football.
