The North Canton Fire Department was established in 1962 by a group of dedicated community members who came together to protect the North Hominy, Beaverdam, North Canton, and Thickety communities. Through donations, bake sales, and tax money, they raised enough funds to purchase their first firefighting equipment, a 1963 American LaFrance Pumper. Today, the department has grown to include 39 members and serves approximately 4,500 community members, with a six-mile district coverage and a fleet of 10 apparatuses.
With mutual aid agreements in place with six different departments across Haywood and Buncombe County, the North Canton Fire Department is well-equipped to serve and protect its community. Despite the advancements in funding and equipment, the department's founding members' passion and drive to serve remain unchanged, ensuring the safety and well-being of the people they serve.
