Yolanda "Shae" Burkett, MS, OT, CLT

I became a physical therapist following a career as an athletic trainer. I wanted to help a broader, more diverse population improve their participation, function, and quality of life, while building on my foundation. I was drawn to the specialty of pelvic health due to the complex/intricate nature of it and the powerful impact pelvic PT can have on a patient’s quality of life and function. I enjoy the puzzle of the human body. I approach my patient care with a zoomed-out lens, taking a holistic, patient-centered approach. I am passionate about empowering individuals about their health and anatomy, especially as it relates to pelvic health. When I am not at work, I enjoy being outdoors, hiking, working out, traveling and spending time with my family.

My passion for sports medicine emerged from my love for movement and physical activity. Residency training and board-specialization in sports further developed my ability to help patients optimize their movement, physical health, and function so they can participate in sports and activities they love. Similar to sports, teamwork is key, and I view the patient-provider relationship as a team, working in partnership with patients to develop an individualized plan to facilitate progression towards their goals. I encourage patients to play an active role in their care and integrate patient education to promote long term health and well-being.

I grew up seeing occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, and recreational therapy with my mother who has had five brain bleeds and undergone two brain surgeries. I realized the distinct value of rehabilitation while observing her efforts and celebrating victories with her along the way. I love helping my patients reach their goals and celebrate their victories! I am motivated by hand therapy specifically because of the direct connection between our hand function and our quality of life.
