American Electric Power owns more than 36,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States and is one of the United States' largest electricity generators. It also ranks among the largest electric utilities in the U.S. with more than 5 million customers linked to its more than 10-state electricity transmission and distribution grid. The company s nearly 20,000 employees work in service centers in Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Michael G. Morris has been the chief executive officer of American Electric for more than two years. He has been with the utility company for over two years. Morris earned a BS degree from Eastern Michigan University, and a JD degree from the Detroit College of Law. The company is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. American Electric Power was incorporated in New York in 1906 as American Gas and Electric Company, offering electricity, gas, water and steam services to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
