Oklahoma Messages Project is a highly effective prevention and literacy program based in Edmond, OK. Their mission is to maintain and improve the parent-child relationship, boost literacy, and enhance the social, emotional, and educational outcomes of children whose parents are incarcerated. Through multi-media filming, the organization captures parents in prison reading books to their children, and then mails out the books and DVDs to around 1,000 children before Christmas and 1,000 children for Mother's Day and Father's Day. With over 135,000 children in Oklahoma experiencing the trauma of parental incarceration, Oklahoma Messages Project recognizes the lifelong negative effects this can have on children's lives. By providing video visits and books, the organization fills a significant gap in the lives of these children, helping to decrease anxiety and depression, improve reading and school outcomes, and ultimately ensure that they thrive and stay out of prison.
