The Literacy Council of Reading-Berks has been empowering lives through literacy in the Berks County area since 1968. Institute of the Arts, founded in 1934, is an art school for adult and children. It offers preschool, kindergarten and youth programs. Its offers various services, such as visual art, dance classes that include salsa, swing, and ballet, and language classes for French and Chinese. It also offers piano, guitar, woodwinds, voice and brass instructions, theater and acting classes, and oil painting, portrait making and sculpture. The institute serves more than 2,000 students of all ages. It organizes events for faculty, guest artist and students, including group workshops, outings, outreach programs, summer arts camps, exhibitions, concerts and events. The institute has the George Lehman Yocum Library that maintains a collection of books related to visual and performing arts.
