Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Machado is a highly skilled transplant surgeon who specializes in liver transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and minimally invasive laparoscopic liver surgery. Dr. Machado earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his surgical residency at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Az. He received additional training in abdominal transplant surgery during his fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.He is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, and American Medical Society. He also is an instructor for advanced trauma life support.Dr. Machado has medical staff privileges at Allegheny General Hospital, Forbes Hospital, Jefferson Hospital, and West Penn Hospital.

Alexander Helfand, MD, is a medical oncologist and hematologist with AHN Cancer Institute, specializing in providing compassionate and empathetic oncologic and hematologic care. He diagnoses and treats blood-related illness and cancer. Dr. Helfand went to medical school at Sackler School of Medicine, New York State/American Program, in Tel Aviv, Israel. Upon completion of medical school, he did his residency at Weill Cornell Medicine: New York Presbyterian – Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York and his fellowship in hematology/oncology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Helfand is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is affiliated with the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He speaks Spanish and Hebrew and sees patients ages 18 and older.

Dr. Prerna Mewawalla is a board-certified hematologist-oncologist with specialized expertise in plasma cell disorders like multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, stem cell transplantation, and cellular therapy. She serves as the Medical Director of Apheresis and practices within the Division of Hematology and Cellular Therapy at Allegheny Health Network (AHN). She is also an Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Mewawalla provides advanced, personalized care for patients with multiple myeloma, AL amyloidosis, and other blood cancers. She is actively involved in clinical trials and serves as a principal investigator on several studies focused on cutting-edge treatments and novel therapies. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Mewawalla holds several leadership roles. She is a member of the Cancer Executive Committee and chair of the Women Physician's ERG. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Allegheny County Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Medical Society House of Delegates.
