Cindy Hylton, DMD

A board-certified prosthodontist with a distinguished career of military service, Dr. John Ference provides advanced care and training as the director of MUSC’s unique Digital Dentistry residency. He previously directed predoctoral prosthodontic training at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He served in a variety of command and staff positions with the U.S. Army from 1980-2018. Dr. Ference holds graduate degrees in dental science, public health, strategic leadership, and chemistry. A past president of the Pennsylvania Prosthodontic Association, he also brings a wealth of knowledge in using artificial intelligence to design maxillofacial prosthetics through additive and subtractive manufacturing.

Dr. Douglas J. Alterman is a seasoned dental professional with over 30 years of experience in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Alterman began his career as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy, ensuring the dental readiness of over 3,000 sailors and Marines aboard the USS Ponce LPD-15. He then bought a private practice in Charleston, SC, which he successfully grew and managed for 32 years. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Tulane University and a D.M.D. from MUSC, with advanced training from the Naval Medical Center San Diego, LD Pankey Institute, and other prestigious institutions. Dr. Alterman is an active member of several professional organizations and has served as President of the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry. Dedicated to education and patient care, Dr. Alterman directs MUSC’s Dental Faculty Practice, where he fosters a positive environment, enhancing both patient and staff experiences.

With a dual career in clinical practice and academia, Dr. Trehan combines her passion for patient care with a dedication to education and research. Her comprehensive approach ensures that her patients receive the highest quality of care, grounded in the latest advancements in dental medicine. She served as the Chief Resident at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine’s Oral Medicine Residency Program, graduating in June 2024. Dr. Trehan earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from the Medical University of Łódź, Poland, in June 2022. During her dental education, Dr. Trehan gained experience working in various international locations, including Malta, Toronto, India, and the U.S.A. Her summers were spent honing her skills and expanding her knowledge in different cultural and clinical settings. Additionally, she volunteered in the Oral and Maxillofacial Department, further enhancing her expertise. Dr. Trehan’s commitment to excellence in her field has been recognized through several prestigious awards. She received the Trainee Award in the Case Report category at the 2024 American Academy of Oral Medicine Annual Meeting and the Robert W. Beideman, DMD Outstanding Resident Award in Radiology from the University of Pennsylvania.
