Heather N. Simpson, M.D. is a transplant hepatologist and has been practicing as an Assistant Professor since 2013. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology. Dr. Simpson completed her undergraduate and medical school at Saint Louis University and graduated with her M.D. in 2005. She did her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. She obtained a gastroenterology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. She then elected to pursue a year of additional training in transplant hepatology at the University of Michigan which she completed in 2013. Dr. Simpson belongs to several professional societies including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Society for Transplantation, and the International Liver Cancer Association. Her areas of expertise include management of all general liver diseases such as viral hepatitis B & C, autoimmune liver disease, PBC, PSC, alcoholic liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as the management of complications from cirrhosis. She has particular interests in the treatment of hepatocellular cancer and liver transplantation.

Patrick Flume is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. He serves as the Powers-Huggins Endowed Chair for Cystic Fibrosis and oversees a large Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Center, including the largest adult CF program in South Carolina. He co-led the International Working Group on Antimicrobial Resistance in Cystic Fibrosis. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis. He serves as Associate Vice President for Clinical Research at MUSC, leads a very busy clinical research program for CF, bronchiectasis, and NTM, and is co-principal investigator for the South Carolina Clinical & Translational Research Institute. Many of these studies are related to new drug and therapy development for patients, but he also has an interest in determining optimal management of CF pulmonary exacerbations and is the co-PI in the STOP trials, aimed at identifying optimal treatments for exacerbations.
